A BUYING GUIDE FROM OUR OXFORDSHIRE SHOP

Choosing decorative antiques for a US home

Find individual objects for shelves, walls and tabletops, with practical questions to ask before buying from our antiques shop in England.

Browse the pieces

Start with the object, its scale and its purpose

A photograph can make a small ornament look substantial or a large mirror seem compact. Read the dimensions and compare them with the space where the piece will sit. Our product pages show centimetres and approximate inches when measurements are available. Request any missing measurements before deciding.

Browse the decorative selection below for current listings. Stock changes as individual pieces sell. The collection may include antique, vintage and later decorative items, so use each description for its stated date, origin and materials rather than assuming everything has the same age.

Ceramics and glass

For a vase, bowl or other ceramic, ask for clear views of the base, rim, handles and any maker’s mark. Check the condition notes for chips, cracks and repairs. If you intend to use an item with food, drink or water, ask about that intended use instead of assuming a decorative listing confirms suitability.

Mirrors and framed pieces

When choosing a mirror, check the overall frame dimensions as well as the visible glass. Request photographs of the back, frame corners and existing fittings. Ask about weight so you can plan appropriate installation with someone who can assess your wall and the piece.

Ask for the details a wide photograph cannot show

Close photographs of a signature, label, underside or repaired area can help you assess a listing. Ask which details support an attribution when the maker or period matters to your purchase. Describe the specific detail you want clarified, rather than relying on a general request for “more photos”.

Visible wear can be part of an object’s appeal, but it is still worth understanding its extent. Ask whether loose parts, surface losses or previous alterations are present when these are important to how you intend to display the piece.

Discuss packing and US delivery for the individual item

Smaller does not automatically mean simpler to transport. Include the product link, state or territory and ZIP code in your enquiry. Ask how projecting handles, fragile decoration, glass or loose components would be protected, and confirm the packing and transport costs before purchase.

If a material or origin is unclear, ask for clarification and whether the item can be shipped to your destination. Delivery eligibility, documentation and any import-related charges need confirmation for the specific purchase. This guide does not promise that every listed object can be exported.
