The Protector Type 1A Miners Safety Lamp & Lighting Co TELECOM Mark Eccles, Manchester.

Authentic Protector Lamp Type 1A.

Stamped and badged with maker’s mark.

Originally designed for the GPO (General Post Office), the predecessor to BT (British Telecom), these lamps were used extensively from the 1960s through to the late 1990s, to test for oxygen deficiency in tunnels, ducts, and underground manholes. This version has the Telecom logo on the reverse.

The lamp features a flat wick burner and runs on paraffin (kerosene) or lamp oil, making it simple and reliable to operate. Its compact, robust design also makes it popular today for use on boats, barges, or as an emergency light.
