A good chest of drawers should suit both your room and what you want to store. Before choosing by colour or period, compare its measurements, usable drawer space and condition. Here are the practical checks to make when buying antique or vintage bedroom storage.
Check height, width and depth against the intended position. Ask whether measurements include an overhanging top, feet and projecting handles. Leave space to open the drawers fully and stand in front of them, especially beside a bed or behind a door.
Look inside the drawers
Overall depth does not tell you the usable storage space. Ask for internal drawer dimensions if you need to fit particular items. Compare the arrangement of small and large drawers with what you plan to store, rather than choosing by drawer count alone.
Choose proportions for the room
A narrow, tall chest and a wider, lower chest can solve different storage problems. Check the height of the top if you want to use it for a lamp or display, and allow for sockets, skirting boards and nearby furniture.
Check the access route
Measure doorways, stair landings and tight turns as well as the final space. Do not assume a chest separates into sections or that its feet can be removed. Ask the seller to confirm what can safely be removed for transport.
Condition checks worth making
Review the top, sides, back, feet and drawer interiors, not just the front photograph. Ask for close-ups of any areas you cannot see clearly and a description of repairs or alterations.
Drawer movement and fittings
Ask whether every drawer opens and closes smoothly, whether any runners need attention and whether drawer bottoms are secure. Check for loose handles, missing fittings and replacement parts. If a lock is important to you, confirm that a key is included and the lock has been tested.
Surfaces and repairs
Look for scratches, stains, splits, lifting veneer and repairs around edges or feet. Ask what restoration has been carried out and whether the finish has been changed. Decide which wear you are happy to live with and which work you would need priced before buying.
Structure and stability
Ask whether the chest stands firmly and whether there is movement in the frame or feet. If you plan to place heavy objects on it, discuss the intended use rather than assuming its load capacity. Ask about suitable anti-tip restraint and installation for your home.
Signs needing a closer look
If you notice holes, loose dust, staining or an unusual smell, ask the seller to explain them and provide further photographs. Do not assume that a photograph establishes whether an issue is historic or active. Seek a furniture specialist’s assessment where the condition is uncertain.
Materials, construction and age
Read the description for the stated material, period and any qualifications. Ask which parts are solid wood and which are veneered, and whether handles, feet or other components have been replaced. A material named in a title may not describe every part of the chest.
Request photographs of drawer joints, backs, bases and any maker’s marks if construction or attribution matters to you. A single feature, such as a joint or handle, should not be treated as proof of a date. “Georgian style” or “Victorian style” is not the same claim as a confirmed Georgian or Victorian period piece.
Compare the complete description and condition when assessing value. Include any restoration and delivery costs in your budget; age or an attractive photograph alone does not tell you whether a particular chest is the right purchase.
